Starting this blog feels like opening the door to my heart and inviting you into the journey behind Smiley Strokes. My name is Marilyn Lopez, and I am the artist, entertainer, and heart behind this creative venture. Before becoming a professional face painter and event entertainer, I spent many years as an artist and special education educator, working closely with children and families. Creativity has always been part of who I am, but for a long time, I searched for a way to combine my love for art, children, and meaningful connection.
Smiley Strokes became the answer to a prayer.
On March 29th, one year ago, I decided to begin my journey as a face painter, and that moment changed everything. What started as face painting quickly became something much bigger. I realized I was not simply painting faces. I was helping create memories.

Finding the Heart Behind Smiley Strokes
The most magical part of what I do is seeing the transformation in a child’s eyes when they sit in my chair. One moment they are themselves, and the next they become Spider-Man, a princess, a butterfly, or their favorite superhero. Their joy when they see the final design fills my heart every time.
This transformation is more than just paint on skin. It’s a moment of pure happiness, a spark of imagination, and a memory that families carry with them long after the party ends. Being invited into those moments — whether it’s a birthday party, school festival, community event, baby shower, or family gathering — is something I never take for granted.
My background as a special education educator taught me the importance of connection and understanding. Those lessons shape how I approach every event. I listen carefully to each child’s wishes and create designs that reflect their personalities and dreams. This personal touch is what makes Smiley Strokes unique.
Expanding the Smiley Strokes Experience
Over the past year, my passion has continued to grow. In June, I expanded Smiley Strokes to include balloon twisting, adding another layer of fun and creativity to events. Balloon animals, swords, and crowns quickly became crowd favorites.
Later, I introduced glitter tattoos, which add a sparkling touch to celebrations. These tattoos are perfect for kids who want something quick, colorful, and fun without the wait time of face painting.
In December 2025, I added airbrush tattoos to better serve families in Texas, where the summer heat can make traditional face painting challenging. Airbrush tattoos are durable, quick to apply, and perfect for outdoor events under the hot sun.
Each new service was added thoughtfully, with families’ needs and preferences in mind. This growth reflects the evolving journey of Smiley Strokes — always adapting, always focused on creating joy.

Practical Tips for Parents and Event Planners
From my experience, planning a successful event with face painting and entertainment involves a few key steps:
Book early: Popular dates fill up fast, especially during birthday seasons and holidays.
Choose a shaded or indoor area: This helps keep kids comfortable and protects face paint from heat or rain.
Communicate preferences: Share any themes, favorite characters, or special requests ahead of time.
Prepare for lines: Face painting can take a few minutes per child, so having a schedule or ticket system can keep things organized.
Consider allergies and sensitivities: I use hypoallergenic, non-toxic paints and always ask about skin sensitivities before starting.
These simple steps help ensure a smooth, enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
Behind the Scenes of Smiley Strokes
Running Smiley Strokes is more than just showing up with paint and balloons. It’s about preparation, creativity, and connection.
Before each event, I spend time practicing new designs and perfecting techniques. I keep my supplies clean and organized, and I always bring extras in case of unexpected guests or last-minute requests.
I also take time to connect with parents and event planners before the event. Understanding their vision helps me tailor my services to fit the occasion perfectly.
One of my favorite behind-the-scenes moments is seeing the smiles on children’s faces as they watch their designs come to life. Those smiles are the reason I continue this journey.

The Business of Happiness
To me, Smiley Strokes is not just a business — it’s the business of happiness. Every stroke of paint, every twisted balloon, every glitter tattoo is a small piece of joy I get to share.
This journey has taught me that art is more than a skill; it’s a way to connect, to celebrate, and to create lasting memories. Whether it’s a shy child becoming a fierce tiger or a group of friends sharing laughter over a dinosaur balloon, these moments are priceless.
Thank you for being here and sharing in this journey behind Smiley Strokes. I look forward to creating many more smiles and unforgettable moments with you.
